Metallrecycling: Das Geld liegt auf der Straße

Ein Haufen tiefbrauner Matsche. Das ist es, was die Sortierstraße in Ling Hall nördlich von London nach vielen Arbeitsschritten ausspuckt. Immer wieder macht es laut “klatsch”, wenn ein Matschebrocken aus der Zentrifuge nach unten auf den Haufen fällt. Es ist ein feuchter, halbfester Stoff, der nicht nach viel aussieht, höchstens nach Dünger vielleicht. Doch das Gegenteil ist der Fall: Was die Sortierstraße in Ling Hall nach knapp 30 Minuten Verarbeitungszeit ausgibt, ist Hunderte Pfund wert.

Aus britischem Straßenkehricht, aus einer Mischung von Blättern, Sand, Müllstückchen und Plastikflaschen, filtert das Entsorgungsunternehmen Veolia in Großbritannien wertvolle, für das menschliche Auge unsichtbare Bestandteile heraus und bereitet sie auf. Es sind seltene Metalle wie Palladium, Platin und Rhodium, die aus Auto-Katalysatoren auf die Straßen gelangen. Sie sind zwar nur in winzigen Mengen im Straßendreck enthalten. Da sie aber vergleichsweise selten sind und die Industrie auf diese Stoffe angewiesen ist, glaubt das Unternehmen, dass es sich langfristig lohnt, die Metalle aus dem Kehricht zu filtern. Für die WELT habe ich mir die Anlage in Ling Hall genauer angeschaut.
