Autumn Statement: Osborne verfehlt sein Sparziel und bittet Google & Co zur Kasse

Er streicht, er kürzt, er knausert. Trotzdem ist es Schatzkanzler George Osborne nicht gelungen, sein ehrgeiziges Sparziel zu erreichen. Passend zur Parlamentswahl im kommenden Mai wollte der britische Finanzminister einen ausgeglichenen Haushalt präsentieren. Angesichts der Erholung der britischen Wirtschaft – sie soll dem Internationalen Währungsfonds zufolge in diesem Jahr um rund drei Prozent wachsen – hatten Osborne und das Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) mit steigenden Steuereinnahmen gerechnet.

Trotz der wirtschaftlichen Gesundung hat das Finanzministerium jedoch weniger eingenommen als erwartet; viele der rund zwei Millionen neu geschaffenen Jobs liegen unterhalb der Besteuerungsgrenze. Osborne musste deshalb am Mittwoch vor den Abgeordneten im Unterhaus zugeben, ein wichtiges Ziel seiner Amtszeit nicht erreichen zu können. Ein weiterer Grund dafür sind die Milliarden, die Osborne bei der Vorstellung seines Autumn Statements für den Bau neuer Straßen und die Verbesserung des nationalen Gesundheitsdienstes NHS versprach.
